Done! But Not That Modern.

I finished my mother's quilt, just in time! She loved it! I used Sawtooth Stars, and some of the fabrics were modern, it it really is a more traditional quilt. What do you think?

Almost done with my mother's quilt!

She wanted stars, so I made 18 sawtooth stars, and then set them with blocks in between. I was originally going to make 36 stars, but I ran out of time and energy. Here is one of the stars - I made them modern with some awesome modern fabrics bought at KC Framing and Fabrics in Saratoga Springs. The women there have great taste in fabrics and it has become my go-to place for fresh, fun fabrics! They also have a Frequent Buyers Program: once you spend $200, you get a $20 gift certificate! I love that, and it is surprisingly easy (gulp!) for fabric addicts such as myself to spend $200.

My blue and white quilt!

I have wanted a blue and white quilt for a while, so I started one today. I think I am going to do a sampler. This is the first block, the ribbon star, from I tried it breaking up the star, and then with the shades matching, and asked my husband for his help. He did not understand what I was asking, so I took pictures, and decided that way.

Finally, I decided, and here is my first block. I was tired, it is VERY sloppy, so I am going to redo it tomorrow night. It is shamefully bad. :) Peace.

Modern star blocks for table runner

Hi all,
I had this around for a while, and I had to take out all of the free motion quilting I had put in, as it was all loose and nest-y. I sat down with a cup of coffee and some Tudors action, and just did it. I love the colors, and these fabrics started my love affair with polkas dots, which continues to this day. I am keeping this one!

Dream Block!

So I dreamt this block in a dream last night, and when I got up, I had to make it. It is a little too literal "red cross," but it is a starting point!

Too Many Ideas Whirling Through My Brain!!

Cold up here in the North Country. The snow guns have been going at Gore Mountain at night, and we are getting ready for our Open House next Saturday at Seven Sisters Gift Shop in North Creek. Everything in the shop will be 20% off, plus we are going to have food, drink, and music!! Stop by if you are in the area - we have some lovely quilts for sale, also!

Did you ever have trouble getting motivated because there are too many ideas whirling through your brain?? I am at that point, and have been for a while. I quilt, I make pottery and jewelry, and I work full time. And I have a busy brain, through which travels many ideas and visuals. So when I get a few hours, I get overwhelmed, and want to hide in my room rather than decide what to do. How stupid is that?? But I get paralyzed - maybe a fear of screwing up, in my limited time?? I don't know, but I do know that in the next week and two days, I have a lot of free time, and I am going to CREATE!!!! I am going to throw down that gauntlet of fear and paralysis, and sew and make pottery and jewelry!! Yes!!!

Will show you the results when finished. Enjoy the weekend!!

A favorite quilt - I don't remember where I found it, I think on Pinterest, but I did NOT make this!!

Found the cutest pattern ever!!

Hi all,
I love birds, and I love stylistic pictures. I found the cutest pattern ever on It is a bird quilt, and the kit, including fabrics, is only $45.44. It says it is for a lap quilt, but gives about 7 yards of fabric, which sounds like it could make a bigger quilt also. Or you could always put a border around the edges to make it a twin or even a double. I don't know that I would push it to Queen sized - it might be too much border, not enough quilt, although why couldn't you put some of these birds around the border, too?

Anyway, here is the link and the picture:

Enjoy your weekend!! Do something creative!!!

Been remiss, my world travels have kept me busy!

Visiting museums, looking at quilts around the world, studying art with renowned European masters....oh, sorry, that was my friend emilie's fantasy of why I have been lazy.

Actually, the truth is sad. I was in an online block swap, and. I sent out two blocks, very proud of my improving abilities. I got an email telling me how my blocks were terrible, and she couldn't use them, and I quit quilting for about 5 months. After a talking to from that Bossy Friend Emilie of mine, I got the urge to sew again. I have missed it. I was enjoying learning old blocks and putting a modern take on them. I like the coming together of blocks, a mini-miracle each time, that something so cool and identifiable can come from some random geometries of fabric. I love the colors and the feel of really nice fabric in my hands, soi am starting again.

Also, when I asked my mother what she wanted for Christmas, I was hoping she said, "a necklace, or piece of pottery," something I could make in a day. Nope, Mom wants a queen sized quilt in HER colors! The three quilts I have given her, she told me, we're in MYcolors!" The ingratitude!!! So through some kind of karmic twist, my mother is pushing me to get back to quilting. She saw a picture of an Ohio Star, and wanted that. So now I want to do it in modern fabrics. Ideas?? Here are some I've found:

Oooffff!!!! I am so behind!!!

I am supposed to have finished two blocks from my July Quilts for Cancer flickr group, and they were really confusing to me (duh!) so I finished one, and packed up the other and have to send it out. The August spiderweb, oy!! My eyes just glaze over every time I look at the tutorial. It is just so beyond my capabilities right now, so I have been pretty discouraged about quilting. The September one, thankfully, is easy. I can handle that one!!

I will post progress as I make it! Be well, enjoy the beautiful weather we are having in the northeast!

Where has time gone?

I moved to my cabin, and am not comfortable in my new space, and haven't been sewing. How is it possible I got so much more done when I was working full-time all school year? I really need to get moving. I am having a tension problem when free motion quilting, or free ranging, as I like to call it! I need to figure that out and get some overdue blocks out this week. I organized an art workshop this week, so I have to do that this week, plus my pottery sold out of my shop, so i have Been trying to catch up on that. Whew! Maybe I need a quilting workshop? Yeah! That's the ticket! I'm going to go look for one! Peace, Nancy

Been busy with life!!

I have been so busy - I moved from my house, I just had my youngest graduate high school, and I have to set up my sewing room where I am now. I have been a wee bit crazy!! So...I shall leave you with one of my favorite quilts, I just adore this!! I am using these colors, but not this pattern for a new quilt I am making. I think I like it because of the really brights that contrast with the grey. Hope you love it, too!

The "Quilts for Cancer" Quilt Assembled

I started a small group called, "Quilts for Cancer," and each month we each make a block or two and send them to the woman who is making the quilt for the month. I received the most beautiful blocks and put them together. Now I just have to ask my friend, Emilie Mannion, to quilt it for me!! I hope whoever receives it enjoys it and gets some strength from all of the love put into the blocks by the wonderful ladies who made it!

A Couple of Sawtooth Stars

Good morning,
I am going to make a wall hanging with 4 of these - these are all new to me, and I am really thrilled with how cool pieced blocks come out!! I don't know that I have the patience to do 40 of them, but I can handle 4!!!

Thursday, May 3, 2012

I just finished a few blocks for my heal at do.Good Stitches. It was a ribbon star block from Faith at http://www.freshlemonsquilts/, shown here:

I love the design and the colors the Good Stitches member requested. These quilting bees are really pushing me to do things I would never have done, like traditional blocks in great colors.

Hovering Hawks

This is one of my blocks going to the NuBees Quilting Group on flickr. I really loved the orange and blue together, a lot more than I thought I would. It is going to a woman who is making a "Gator" quilt for her husband. Hope he likes it!!!

I am making progress on my Monaluna Taali quilt - it is going to be so cute!! My daughter has already put her name on it - she said, "I am getting that quilt to take away to college with me!" It is nice to send something that we have made with our kids when they go away, although both my sons left their quilts home here. Boys are different, I think. Not so sentimental. But I know they both love their quilts.

I think after I finish my Taali quilt, I am going to start one with Kate Spain's Terrain, because I need a lavender-ish quilt for the guest room. I am thinking about this pattern:

Pics are of the Taali line! Just am in love with it!!

Two More Quilts Done!!

Just got two quilts back from my quilting teacher, Emilie Mannion, who quilted them on her mid-arm!! I like to call it "free range" quilting, instead of free motion quilting - it gives it a more adventurous feel!! I think the quilting on them is wonderful!! One is batiks and the grey one is all Lotta Jansdotter fabrics using the patterns from What do you think??

Monaluna's Taali by Jennifer Moore

Jennifer Moore of Monaluna generously donated a fat quarter collection of her fun and whimsical Taali line. I am putting blocks together, and they are wonderful!! 100% organic cotton, they don't have that thin feel that many organic fabrics have. They feel smooth and substantial, and the designs and colors just make me smile!! Here are two of the blocks I have created, and I have all of the others cut out and ready to go. I am going to work on it some more tonight and tomorrow. Thank you, Jennifer!!! I adore your fabric!!!

Lotta Jansdotter Quilt almost done!!!

I have finished piecing the Lotta Jansdotter Echo fabric quilt!! Yippee!!! I am thrilled by it!! I am sending it to my friend, Emilie Mannion, to quilt it, as it is about a Queen size, and I don't want to wrestle with that on my Janome. Emilie has a mid-arm and does a wonderful job quilting!

Here she is, in her unquilted glory!! I used the pattern from here:
It is called Lemon Squares and it came out beautifully!!
